SES – NYC 2009 – Not for Advanced SEOs

March 25, 2009

I want to forewarn anyone reading this, this is strictly my opinion and I feel the need to share it. I attended just the first day of SES NYC, this is my third time attending this conference now. I have to say that really not much has changed and I was pretty disappointed. I do realize it’s a very heavy prospecting and networking event. If you have never been, buckle up! This is really not a place where the advanced SEO person can go in sit in on a session and walk away feeling like they learned something new. Ok I don’t want to be negative Nellie, but really, don’t call something “advanced SEO” and talk about Meta Tags and spend 10 minutes on talking about why we shouldn’t't use Keywords Meta. I really think most or all advanced SEOs know this already and if they don’t, they aren’t really advanced in their field. From the first year I attended, in fact the very first session I sat in on, was a session called measuring metrics for your SEO program, and someone raised their hand and asked what SEO stood for. Yes, really. There is more prospecting and head hunting going on here than anything. On the bright side, it is a great place for the new or beginning SEO/SEM person to learn and take in all that a typical search conference has to offer. Get your free pens and key chain lights and all the other crap you can.  If you are new to the industry, under three years, it is a great opportunity. If however, your ready for heavier more challenging information, my advice is stick to the SMX Advanced and other SMX related conferences. I did attend SMX NYC back in the fall, it was very good, sat and ate lunch with Danny Sullivan – interesting guy! This is not a plug for Danny Sullivan, but he does get it when  those within the SEO world ask for something a little more on the next level. I have yet to attend an SMX Advanced conference, what with the travel freeze going on, I am going to certainly try if not this year, there’s always SMX Advanced 2010! Hope to see you there!
