Kaushik Rules for Web Analytics KPIs

Avinash Kaushik has some great analytics learnings – after just sitting in on a web analytics 1-day conference, I actually find Avinash’s blog more educational. I don’t mean to belittle the speaker, who had a pretty impressive analytics resume, but if your presenting information based on your expertise, you should probably appear at the very least enthusiastic about the topic or site some real life examples every now and again – and please do not read your PowerPoint slides – hell, I can read – tell me something I don’t know.OK – just climbed down off my soap box, sorry folks. Back to what my original intent of this post was to be – the rules for web analytics KPIs, or Key Performance Indicators, i.e. “metrics”. I was looking for a specific process to follow, but the way Avinash explains it, understanding first and foremost what your company’s KPIs should be certainly helps when you think about the monthly reporting your going to be sharing with your executive level team – who may or may not know or care what a page view is – at the end of the day how is this information helping the company’s bottom line?Understanding AOV, average order value – one of the most important metrics there is.How many conversions were there, and number of transactions? This information will also help in both your SEO and SEM strategies – by just knowing who these visitors are and where you can target them.As many of you know working on the client side, educating the audience in not only understanding how impactful SEO is, but how your analytics works within the entire picture and specifically what sort of metrics they should be focusing on rather than what they had previously thought might be top of mind. Education, education, education – and more education for yourself and your team from the top down.Rather than repeating what Avinash has to say, I would urge anyone in this area to read his blog and try to integrate this knowledge into your everyday marketing. peace out!
